Many years ago, when I was trying to find my way, I sat in on a success seminar where I heard a sage on the stage say that sales was both the highest paying hard job and the lowest paying easy job in the world. Now, all these years later, I find myself as a parent first, and maybe a salesman second, who is trying to sell his ideas to his children. And as a parent, I sometimes can’t help but think back to what that sage on the stage said about that concept of the hardest and most rewarding job or the easiest and least rewarding job.

You see, over the years, I have found, just like so many of you have found, that parenting really is the hardest job in the whole wide world. But it’s also the most rewarding job in the whole wide world, too. I can’t count how many times I have thought about pulling my hair out over something the kids did. And later one laughed and smiled with my wife at the total absurdity of it all. Children really do have a way of getting us parents to look at the world differently. Hopefully… if we let it… in a better and more interesting way…

Something that will help out with the craziness is routines. Routines will lessen our children’s perception that we’re always bossing them around. In addition, each one of our children has their own unique personality. So let’s take some time truly to enjoy each individual child. And don’t miss opportunities to enjoy the little things that make our kids happy.

Now, as my Granddaddy always said, “Go learn, lead, and lay the way to a better world for all of us.” Keep in mind and in sight the joys of parenting because that’s going to be the backup fuel you’re going to need when doing the hardest and most rewarding job in this whole wide world. And once again, parents, thanks in advance for all that you do, and all that you will do…
